my story

Once upon a time, there was a Jack who did voices...

Raised in rural Cornwall by an English Mum and American Dad, I had a roundabout but perhaps inevitable path to voice over. One day, when I was running around my house doing an impression of my teacher (maybe 8 years old), my mum introduced me to a BBC Lord of the Rings radio drama adapation with a full cast and music. It was gamechanging for me. I used to listen to it every single night as I went to sleep (until the casette tape finished its side!). This led to me begging my mum for other audiobooks, and so it continued, to the point where I would be able to recite whole pages from memory.

Meanwhile at school, I was always asked to be the narrator for the school christmas nativity or other productions, because I loved reading aloud in class, and could pronounce everything from a very young age. Unsurprisingly then, when I first went to secondary school and started learning foreign languages, I took to it like a duck to water. I found it easy, had a good ear for it, and loved making new sounds, doing accents and 'performing' the language (in between doing Gollum impressions).

This took me to study a degree in Spanish and Linguistics in Edinburgh, Scotland. Within the next 5 years I graduated first class with distinction, lived in Spain and France for a year each and performed in a play completely in Spanish. I then had to figure out what to do with my life, so like a lot of insecure British graduates, I moved to London and started a business graduate scheme. Although it never really fit me, I did learn a lot. How businesses run. How to make great ad creative. How to understand data. How to manage people (and how not to). But I wanted to have a bigger individual role, and be less of a cog in an enormous machine. So, I left to join a startup with dogs in the office.

There I learned a lot about growing and scaling a new business, met a bunch of cool people, and also affirmed what I had sensed for a while - I needed to not work for anyone else, and do something creative. I decided to revive my love of languages, accents and performing that I had muted for a few years, and combine it with my new skills in building and running a business and became a full time voice over artist after 9 months of fitting it around my day job at the end of 2018.

I now voice national TV commercials, blue chip e-learning, tech startup explainers and video game villains for clients all over the world. As I said, pretty roundabout, but mostly inevitable. When not speaking in a padded room for money, I spend quality time with my American wife, Irish greyhound and new Scottish baby. I also try to find time to cook, compose music, and write.
